D'où viennent les enfants ? Les réponses à cette question apparemment banale forment le miroir des cultures, de l'histoire et des mentalités. Du baiser au bébé arpente cet immense territoire entre malice et gravité, passé et présent, ici et ailleurs, science, médecine et imaginaire. Son parcours à la scénographie intime et insolite fait revivre à chacun-e d'entre nous la trame possible d'une histoire dont nous sommes le fruit.

Tout commence par la séduction. Entre alchimie, arguties et obligations, elle est le moment où se nouent des existences, des parades amoureuses aux entremetteurs en passant par les mots d'amour et les modèles qui nous guident et parfois nous encombrent. Au sortir des préliminaires, le chemin prend la direction des unions. Le symbole et la chair s'y côtoient entre rituels de fertilité et recherche de volupté, entre procréation et sexualité, deux moments que notre modernité a découplés d'une manière sans doute inédite dans l'histoire. La contraception et la procréation assistée sont désormais les deux rivages entre lesquels nous redéfinissons la reproduction des humains propre à notre société. Continuant sur le chemin du baiser au bébé, nous entrons dans le long couloir de l'attente. De hier à aujourd'hui, la quarantaine de semaines de gestation est désormais scandée de moments et d'événements qui rendent déjà présent ce qui n'est pas encore né. Les tests et les choix qui en découlent marquent la maîtrise de plus en plus rapprochée de cette genèse mystérieuse et inatteignable qu'ont tenté de comprendre des générations de savants. C'est aussi ce moment durant lequel les liens se tissent au fil des préparatifs de l'heureux événement. A travers les âges et les cultures, la naissance a longtemps été une affaire de femmes dotées de savoirs et de savoir-faire qui formeront les bases d'une discipline médicale avec son lot de techniques et d'instruments. Mais rien ne dit encore que le nouveau-né prendra place dans sa société. Le nourrir, lui donner un nom, en prendre soin, l'inscrire dans une tradition sont autant de conditions nécessaires pour qu'il devienne un être humain à part entière, des conditions qui aujourd'hui encore ne sont pas égales si l'on naît ici ou ailleurs.

Du premier regard d'un couple à celui porté vers un enfant, Du baiser au bébé nous emmène ainsi dans la diversité des temps, des pratiques et des traditions qui ont façonné des manières de naître dont nous sommes tous des héritiers.

FROM KISS TO KID

Where do our children come from? The answers we offer to this seemingly banal question reveal the interaction of human history, culture and psychology in all its complexity. From Kissing to Kids, explores a vast territory - suspended between gravity and levity - that encompasses past and present, here and elsewhere, science, medicine and the realms of the imagination. Its narrative - at once intimate and strange - recreates for us an experience of which we are all the offspring.

In the beginning is seduction. A mysterious nexus of chemistry, commerce and the alchemy of the soul, seduction is the sublime instant when existences are bound together. It is a rite of passage in which courtship rituals combine with the best efforts of matchmakers and the poetry of love vies with the moral codes that guide and sometimes burden us.

Once the preliminaries dispatched, couples slide inevitably to coupling. Symbol and flesh dance to the tunes of fertility rites and voluptuous abandonment; and union is consummated in an act where sexual pleasure and procreative duty overlap. Or at least they did, for at no moment in history have these two principals been so "uncoupled" as they are at present. Today, contraception and medically assisted procreation constitute the bookends within which the tale of human reproduction is told.

Continuing on the path from kissing to kids, we enter a long corridor of waiting. In the past as in the present, the forty or so weeks of human gestation are punctuated by moments and events that allow the person yet unborn to be already present amongst us. Medical tests - and the choices they imply - signal the more-and-more perfect control that humanity exercises over a process which, for all that and despite the best efforts of generations of scientists, remains essentially mysterious.

Down the ages and in all cultures, childbirth has long been a matter for women: women possessed of special knowledge and gifts. Yet that knowledge now forms the basis of a medical discipline replete with its own paraphernalia of tools and technology. This science, however, cannot ensure that the newborn take up its proper place within society. If it is to fully become a human being, it must be fed and named; it must be cared for and initiated into the traditions of a culture. And, depending on where or how it is born, such conditions are still far from equal.

So, from those first passionate glances across a crowded room to the loving gaze that parents bestow on their infants, From Kissing to Kids leads us through the rich diversity - of time and place, of culture and tradition - that has modelled the ways in which are all brought into the world.
